![]() We are committed to the production of practical, affordable, working vessels. We value a union of form and function but favor function. Our boats are not intended as art objects. They are beautiful but that is a natural side effect of materials and pragmatic forms rather than an end in itself. We strive to build the best boat possible for the intended use at the lowest cost to the buyer. The result is a boat that performs as expected and is easy to repair and maintain at a price that is competitive with most production model Kevlar boats.
Neither wood nor fiberglass, our boats are a single composite material that shares many of the most desirable characteristics of the other materials of which canoes, kayaks and recreational rowing shells are usually made. This material is approximately as stiff and as durable as fiberglass, as light as Kevlar and as rugged as plastic. Narrow strips of Atlantic White Cedar create the shape. The wood is saturated with epoxy resin and then the entire hull is encased in a layer of tightly woven fiberglass set in epoxy. The resulting material is as abrasion resistant as most other materials. Our boats tolerate normal use like dragging over gravel or oyster beds better than fiberglass or plastic because even a very deep scratch is the same color and texture as the surface. The scratch remains far less visible than, for example, when fiberglass is scraped beneath the gel coat. Repairs are easy to do and can be completely hidden. Even serious damage can effectively be repaired so as to completely restore the original strength, performance and beauty. As with conventional fiberglass little regular maintenance is required.
Our boats are hand-crafted one at a time. We do not stockpile "standard" models. Most orders are custom. We work to match each boat to its buyer and intended use. Consequently a wait of 8 to 12 weeks is normally to be expected. A non-refundable deposit of 30% is required before construction will be scheduled. We prefer checks or money orders but credit cards are accepted through PayPal. Florida buyers pay state and local sales tax.
Our shop is located in Tallahassee, Florida. Shipping to most locations in the continental U.S. runs between $200 and $350 and generally takes about 2 weeks. We charge only the actual cost of shipping after our discount. There are no packing or handling charges.
